CVE-2024-8190: Ivanti Cloud Services Appliance OS Command Injection RCE
Ivanti · Cloud Services Appliance
Ivanti Cloud Services Appliance 4.6 Patch 518 and earlier contains an OS command injection flaw (CWE-78) that lets a remote attacker with admin privileges run arbitrary commands on the appliance. Because the affected 4.6.x line is End-of-Life, this class of flaw is unlikely to receive further fixes, making the exposure durable for anyone still running it.
Description
An OS command injection vulnerability in Ivanti Cloud Services Appliance versions 4.6 Patch 518 and before allows a remote authenticated attacker to obtain remote code execution. The attacker must have admin level privileges to exploit this vulnerability.
CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
Automated analysis
critical priorityThe flaw is in CISA KEV with very high EPSS probability, grants remote code execution, and affects an End-of-Life product that will not be patched.
What it is
Ivanti Cloud Services Appliance 4.6 Patch 518 and earlier contains an OS command injection flaw (CWE-78) that lets a remote attacker with admin privileges run arbitrary commands on the appliance. Because the affected 4.6.x line is End-of-Life, this class of flaw is unlikely to receive further fixes, making the exposure durable for anyone still running it.
Impact
An attacker with admin access gains remote code execution on the appliance, allowing full compromise of the host and any credentials or data it handles. The CVSS vector shows high confidentiality, integrity and availability impact.
Attack surface
Reachable over the network (AV:N) with no user interaction (UI:N), but exploitation requires high privileges (PR:H), meaning the attacker must already hold admin-level credentials on the appliance.
Exploitation
CVE-2024-8190 is listed in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog (added 2024-09-13), and EPSS gives a 30-day exploitation probability of about 0.885 (99.8th percentile). No ransomware campaign use is documented in the record.
What to do
- Remove Ivanti CSA 4.6.x from service or migrate to the supported 5.0.x line, since 4.6.x is End-of-Life and will not receive further security updates.
- If CSA 4.6.x must remain temporarily, restrict network access to the appliance to trusted management networks only.
- Rotate all administrative credentials and any secrets stored or processed by the appliance.
- Audit and reduce the number of accounts holding admin privileges on the appliance.
- Monitor the Ivanti advisory and CISA alert pages for updated guidance.
Detection
- Review appliance and host logs for unexpected child processes or shell commands spawned by the CSA service.
- Alert on new or unusual outbound connections from the appliance to external hosts.
- Monitor for anomalous admin logins or authentication from unexpected source addresses.
- Hunt for signs of post-exploitation activity such as new accounts, scheduled tasks or modified configuration on the appliance.

Exploitation in the wild
CISA added CVE-2024-8190 to the Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 13 September 2024 as "Ivanti Cloud Services Appliance OS Command Injection Vulnerability". Required action: As Ivanti CSA has reached End-of-Life status, users are urged to remove CSA 4.6.x from service or upgrade to the 5.0.x line of supported solutions, as future vulnerabilities on the 4.6.x version of CSA are unlikely to receive future security updates. Federal deadline 4 October 2024.
