CVE-2018-5378: Quagga bgpd missing bounds check leaks memory and crashes via NOTIFY
Quagga · Quagga
Quagga bgpd before 1.2.3 fails to bounds check data sent with a NOTIFY message when an attribute length is invalid. This allows arbitrary data from the bgpd process to be sent over the network to a peer and can also crash the daemon. The flaw is a memory buffer overflow (CWE-119) in a widely deployed routing daemon.
Description
The Quagga BGP daemon (bgpd) prior to version 1.2.3 does not properly bounds check the data sent with a NOTIFY to a peer, if an attribute length is invalid. Arbitrary data from the bgpd process may be sent over the network to a peer and/or bgpd may crash.

Automated analysis
high priorityHigh EPSS (0.742) and a remotely reachable memory flaw in a core routing daemon justify prompt patching despite the medium CVSS score.
What it is
Quagga bgpd before 1.2.3 fails to bounds check data sent with a NOTIFY message when an attribute length is invalid. This allows arbitrary data from the bgpd process to be sent over the network to a peer and can also crash the daemon. The flaw is a memory buffer overflow (CWE-119) in a widely deployed routing daemon.
Impact
An attacker can cause bgpd to crash, disrupting BGP routing, and may leak portions of process memory to a peer. The confidentiality impact is limited and the availability impact is high.
Attack surface
Reachable over the network via BGP peering (AV:N). The CVSS vector requires low privileges (PR:L) and no user interaction (UI:N), consistent with an attacker who can establish or influence a BGP session.
Exploitation
Not listed in CISA KEV and no ransomware associations are documented. EPSS is high (0.742, 99.46th percentile), indicating elevated predicted exploitation activity, but the record does not confirm public exploit code.
What to do
- Upgrade Quagga to version 1.2.3 or later, or apply the vendor patch referenced in the Quagga advisory.
- Apply the Debian DSA-4115, Ubuntu USN-3573-1, or Gentoo GLSA 201804-17 updates for affected distributions.
- Restrict BGP peering to trusted, authenticated peers and filter invalid attribute lengths at the edge.
- Monitor bgpd for unexpected restarts or crashes and investigate immediately.
Detection
- Monitor bgpd logs and system logs for crash, restart, or NOTIFY-related error messages.
- Use network monitoring to detect malformed BGP NOTIFY messages with invalid attribute lengths.
- Track bgpd process uptime and alert on unexpected restarts.
- Review BGP peer configurations for unauthorized or unexpected peers.
This assessment is produced automatically and is not human-reviewed. Verify against the vendor advisory before acting on it.
Affected products
3 vulnerable configurations from NVD's CPE data, grouped by vendor and product.
