CVE-2018-17532: Teltonika RUT9XX routers unauthenticated OS command injection
TTeltonika · Rut900 Firmware
Teltonika RUT9XX routers running firmware before 00.04.233 fail to sanitize user input in autologin.cgi and hotspotlogin.cgi, allowing OS command injection. Because the flaw is reachable without authentication and commands run as root, any network-reachable device is at serious risk.
Description
Teltonika RUT9XX routers with firmware before 00.04.233 are prone to multiple unauthenticated OS command injection vulnerabilities in autologin.cgi and hotspotlogin.cgi due to insufficient user input sanitization. This allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges.
CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
Automated analysis
critical priorityUnauthenticated remote root command execution with public exploit code and very high EPSS probability makes this an urgent patching priority.
What it is
Teltonika RUT9XX routers running firmware before 00.04.233 fail to sanitize user input in autologin.cgi and hotspotlogin.cgi, allowing OS command injection. Because the flaw is reachable without authentication and commands run as root, any network-reachable device is at serious risk.
Impact
An attacker can execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the router, gaining full control of the device and any traffic or credentials it handles.
Attack surface
Reachable over the network via HTTP requests to autologin.cgi and hotspotlogin.cgi; no authentication or user interaction is required per the CVSS vector (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N).
Exploitation
Public exploit code is referenced in Packet Storm, Full Disclosure and the vendor advisory, and EPSS is 0.70659 (99.4th percentile), indicating high likelihood of exploitation; it is not listed in CISA KEV.
What to do
- Upgrade RUT9XX firmware to 00.04.233 or later as the primary fix.
- Restrict management and hotspot/autologin interfaces from untrusted networks using firewall rules or VLAN segmentation.
- Disable or block access to autologin.cgi and hotspotlogin.cgi where the hotspot feature is not needed.
- Monitor vendor advisories for further firmware updates and apply them promptly.
Detection
- Inspect HTTP request logs for suspicious parameters sent to autologin.cgi and hotspotlogin.cgi.
- Alert on shell metacharacters or command strings in web request parameters reaching these CGI endpoints.
- Monitor router process activity for unexpected child processes spawned by the web server.
- Watch for outbound connections or configuration changes originating from the router that are not administrator-initiated.
This assessment is produced automatically and is not human-reviewed. Verify against the vendor advisory before acting on it.
Affected products
3 vulnerable configurations from NVD's CPE data, grouped by vendor and product.
